Kitchen-sink garbage disposals

I was surprised to learn recently that some cities, including New York, have outlawed the shredding of garbage dishwasher, at least in homes. He believed that these machines were ecologically sound. What is truth? – Maggie Mangan, S. Louis, MO

The dishwasher of garbage grinders are not necessarily organic, but they play a valuable role in spraying bits of food and other debris from kitchen to pass the local sewer or septic systems without causing Atocha. In the U.S. in general terms, about half of all households have a garbage disposer in the kitchen. New York outlawed the devices for many years, thinking that a ban would ease the structural fatigue of the urban sewage. But a study conducted in the mid-nineties found benefits that suggested suspending the ban, including a likely reduction in problems of infestation of rats and cockroaches and a reduced flow of solid waste to landfills about to burst. So New York in 1997 began allowing the devices again.

But the shredding of garbage are not the most environmentally friendly way of disposing of waste food. According to Mark Jeantheau of popular ecositio Grinning Planet, conscientious consumers interested in returning nutrients to the soil should avoid the garbage disposer for fertilizers.

“The waste captured by one of these devices [in a garbage disposer] is not going back to natural sources of water to be eaten by fish and other life forms,” he stated. The treatment of waste water and septic systems remove “any nutritional value that the waste could have contained.” In fact, most of the current filtracións sewer use chemicals to get rid of any life forms, beneficial or not. In addition, grinding food in a garbage disposer uses lots of fresh water, which is fast becoming a valuable product.

Those who have their own septic systems should also perhaps reduce their use of the garbage disposer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), regular use of garbage grinders leads to a more rapid increase of layers of mud and Verdin in the septic tank and an increased risk jams in the area of land due to adsorption of Merger higher suspended solids in the effluent. “Jeantheau adds that even when a given septic system is designed to handle heavier loads based on food waste, yet perhaps not worth the risk:” There are few nightmares worse than seeing the owner of your system Septic decomposed. ”

While making fertilizers may sound like a dirty job, does not have to be. First, those who clean the dishes should make sure to download every scrap of food in a drawer for fertilizers located in the kitchen with a tight lid seal. Currently, many municipalities provide such bins to residents concerned. One of the mesh strainer in the sink resumidero can catch smaller pieces of food for download in the drawer of fertilizer when the dishes are processed.

When the composting of kitchen drawer is full, it can be downloaded in a drawer largest fertilizer outside. After four to six months, you should have a good amount of fertilizer to apply to your garden and resume the health of their land. Companies such as The Compost Bin and Clean Air Gardening offer online selling a variety of crates of high quality fertilizer in different shapes and sizes, and provide relevant information in abundance for the consumer.
